Observing short-timescale cloud development to constrain aerosol–cloud interactions

چکیده
Abstract. The aerosol impact on liquid water path (LWP) is a key uncertainty in the overall climate of aerosol. However, despite significant effort this area, size effect remains poorly constrained, and even sign unclear. Recent studies have shown that relationship between droplet number concentration (Nd) LWP an unreliable measure Nd variations due to difficulty establishing causality. In work, we use satellite observations short-term development clouds examine role perturbations variations. Similar previous studies, increase followed by general decrease with increasing observed, suggesting negative response warming adjustment also responds local environment, production, entrainment from free troposphere wet scavenging all acting modify Nd. Many these effects act further steepen Nd–LWP obscure causal LWP. Using temporal account for feedbacks system, weaker observed over most globe. This highly sensitive initial cloud state, illuminating roles different processes shaping relationship. nature current observing system limits work single time period observations, highlighting need more frequent properties constrain behaviour at process timescales.

متن کاملObserving cirrus halos to constrain in-situ measurements of ice crystal size
In this study, characteristic optical sizes of ice crystals in synoptic cirrus are determined using airborne measurements of ice crystal size distributions, optical extinction and water content. The measurements are compared with coincident visual observations of ice cloud optical phenomena, in particular the 22◦ and 46◦ halos. In general, the 5 scattering profiles derived from the in-situ clou...
متن کاملObserving with the ISO Short-Wavelength Spectrometer
The Short-Wavelength Spectrometer (SWS) is one of the four instruments on-board ESA’s Infrared Space Observatory (ISO), launched on November 17, 1995. The spectrometer covers the wavelength range of 2.38 to 45.2 m with a spectral resolution ranging from 1000 to 2000. By inserting Fabry-Perot filters the resolution can be enhanced by a factor 20 for the wavelength range from 11.4 to 44.5 m. An o...
متن کاملLearning Affordance Maps by Observing Interactions
We address the problem of predicting affordances for dense 3D geometry scans of real-world scenes. Using an RGBD camera setup we observe people interacting with objects and learn the correlation between body part positions and interacted geometry. We encode this information as affordance maps over 3D geometry and predict affordances for novel scenes where no observations are available.
متن کاملInfrastructure for observing local human–environment interactions
Imagine a world where nature and society coexist in a healthy symbiosis, where human impacts on the environment are minimal, and where communities are safe from natural and technological hazards. Imagine a time when scientists can monitor such sustainable human–environment interactions, when they can interactively share and compare data, analyses, and ideas about those interactions from their h...
